Tile Editor 0.34 HTML manual. Before you start to use the program you should
read this document.
The author of this program can not be made responsible
for any damage caused by this program. At the moment
's
Tile Editor is freeware.
General Information
Saving a tile will permantly change the file itself. Therefore
you should always keep a backup of the files you change with
's
Tile Editor. Furthermore a ROM's checksum will be changed when saving to
file. You can use the Gameboy checksum repair feature found in the 'File
Info' tool. Do never use the checksum repair with any other file than a
Gameboy ROM or you will damage that file.
's Tile
Editor has 5 different tile modes (Gameboy 4 colors, Neogeo Pocket 4 colors,
NES 4 colors, SNES 16 colors, 1 bit per pixel black and white). When saving
a tile from a 16 colors SNES ROM to a Gameboy ROM the colors must be decrease.
This can be done by hand or automaticly when saving. The Tile Editor will
detect if a tile has to many colors to be saved in a specific tile mode.
You will be prompt in that case.
Click on the element you want to be informed about on the image beneath.

General program tools
Close a currently opened file and exit the program.
This label displays the hex address of the tile that the mouse is pointing at.
Use this switch to hide and show the main menu.
It does not do much at the moment.
File controls
This button shows a dialog where you can select a file you want to view and edit. Opening a file will not delete the content of the editor to allow you copying tiles from one file to the other. When a file is opened it will be added to the file library.
Click on this button to close a currently opened file.
Visualisation tools
Note: Most visualisation tools are found twice in the program; one is used by the browser the other by the editor. Tools that do not apply to this rule are marked.
This will increase the size of the tiles in order to get a closer look at them (browser and editor).
Zoom in will increase the size of the tiles and therefore display less but bigger sprites (browser and editor). Zooming in will help you to make precise changes to a sprite and increases the speed of updating the browser when scrolling around in the file.
Zooming out decreases the size of a tile. This is necessary when editing very big sprite and helps you to find the table of sprites when browsing through ROMs (browser and editor). The more tiles the browser has to display the slower it updates. So do not scroll to fast or might miss a tile table.
'Show/Hide noncopied tiles' switch (editor only)
This switch lets you choose between using the editor as
a scetchboard where you can draw on any tile - not regarding if it has
been copied from the browser or not - and hiding all noncopied tiles and
edit only the tiles that were copied from the browser. In this case the
color which is used to hide the noncopied tiles can be altered by the user.
Please note that after closing a file every tile copied from that closed
file will be marked noncopied and is therefore not displayed when a new
file will be opened and this switch is on.
Browser controls
This is the browser itself. Here the graphical content of an opened file is displayed. Clicking on one of the tiles will select it. The tile is the marked by a rectangle of user defined color. Also the files address (the number of the byte in the file where the tile is stored) will be copied to the 'Browser address ' box. Double-clicking on a tile will copy it to the selected position in the editor.
The scroll bar can be used to quickly move up and down in the file. When browsing through a big file it is recommend to zoom out a little.
This box contents is changed every time you scroll, click on a tile in the browser or if you enter a new address by yourself. It displays the address of the tile in the upper-left corner of the browser.
Clicking on this button will update the content of the browser beginning with the tile at the address shown in the 'Browser address' box.
Here you can select a number that will be added to the address when using the scroll bar. This is essential when browsing through some ROMs like Super Mario Land 1 for Gameboy. Browsing through this file with no number selected will produce tiles that are missing that line that is added to the next tile. To prevent this selecting a number (here: 2) will correct this problem. You can add up to 15 bytes to the address with this tool.
The browser uses the selected mode to decode the graphical
content of the files and will also be used to encode and save a tile back
to file. When opening a new file be sure to select the correct browser
mode.
Editor control
The editor is always available, even when no file is closed. It can also be used to copy one tile from one ROM to the other.
The editor itself is a 10 by 10 tiles clipboard where tiles from the browser can be edited or whole new tiles can be created and the saved to file. Right-clicking on the editor will bring up the popup menu 'Editor' which includes all major functions convered by the 'Editor Control' tool. Clicking on a tile in 'Selection' mode will select the tile. It is then marked by a rectangle and if it is a tile that has been copied from the currently opened file its address will be copied to the 'Tile address' box. The selected tile is also the destination of the next tile that will be copied from the browser. Double-clicking a tile in 'Selection' mode will bring up the popup menu 'Tile' for quick access to the 'Tile Control' functions. In 'Paint' mode a click on the editor will paint the pixel in the selected color. In 'Fill' mode the whole tile will be filled with the selected color.
This button enables the 'Selection' mode.
This button enables the 'Paint' mode.
This button enables the 'Fill' mode.
Saves all tiles that have a valid address back to the opened file. All noncopied tiles and tiles that were copied from a file that has been closed before will not be saved.
All changes done to tiles with a valid address will be destroyed and the original tile will be reloaded from the file. Once a tile is saved it can not be reloaded.
Sets every pixel and tile attribute back to zero.
Tile control
Some tools in this category are similar to the tools from the 'Editor control' part but only effect the selected tile in the editor.
Saves the selected tile back to file in case that it has a valid address.
Reloads the selected tile.
Sets back the tiles attributes and deletes all pixels.
'Save tile to selected address'
This button saves the selected tile to the address of the selected tile in the browser. This tool saves both copied and noncopied tiles.
In this box the address of the selected tile will be displayed. You can also enter any valid address and use the 'Save tile to user defined address' button.
'Save tile to user defined address'
This button saves the selected tile to the address shown in the 'Tile Address' box. This tool saves both copied and noncopied tiles.
Here you can flip the selected tile around the y-axis. This only changes the appearance of the tile in the editor. When copying the tile back to the editor it will be flipped again to its original orientation.
Same as 'Flip X' but instead of flipping the tile around the x-axis it is flipped by the x-axis
A handy tool to prevent some tiles from accidentally being
changed in the editor. It does not affect the tiles in the browser.
Color tools
Here you can see which color is the currently selected color that will be used in 'Paint' and 'Fill' mode.
Clicking on one of these boxes will make the color represented
by this box the new selected color.
Other tools
This button opens the 'Option' window.
This button opens the 'Bookmark' tool. Can handle up to
256 bookmarks for quickly accessing often used graphics in files. These
bookmarks can be saved and loaded in custom BKM files.
'Color Set' button
This button opens the 'Color Set' tool. Here you can edit, save and load color palettes. TilEd uses a custom palette file format but for better compatibility with other formats the Color Set tool also has a feature to load Tile Layer color palettes and a raw loading of 15 bit per color palettes from the file opened in the Browser.
This button opens the 'BMP Import/Export' tool. With this tool you can load and save the editor's content to a 80x80 16 color BMP file for advanced editing with programs like 'Paint Shop'.
This button opens the 'File Info' tool. One of the features
of this tool is a checksum repair for Gameboy ROMs.
