Laures is the main character. His ears look like dragon wings. Besides his fangs and his long nails, they're the sign that he is a demon. He introduces himself as 'Makai Kôshaku' that means 'Prince of the Demon World'. But in reality he is the 'Makai Kôtei', 'Emperor of the Demon World' as it is revealed in the sixth volume. That makes him the most powerful demon of all.
A long time ago Laures let himself be turned into a demon in order to free his lover's soul from a demon's curse because he felt guilty that Alice, the woman he loved, became the demon's victim. In reality the demon wanted Laures but the young prince was unassailable so that the demon turned his attention to Laures' sole weak spot: Alice, the girl Laures loved. After freeing his lover's soul he promised to wait for her until she will be reborn, so that they can be united.
Laures has been waiting until Alice's soul was reborn in Hilda, unfortunately without any memory of her previous life. He killed the tribe of the Azel and erased Hilda's memories so that he could win her love. He has buried the holy sword of the Azel inside her body so that she would be the only person in the world who could slay him. He is fighting against Roderick because both men love Hilda and because Rod is the last of the Azel and destined to wield the holy sword and bring Laures down.
He is not killing people out of pleasure, but he's willing to do everything, absolutely everything, to reach his goal or to protect Hilda even if it means mass murdering. On the other hand he would also sacrifice his own life for hers.
Teteiyus is a full-blooded demon with a face and wings of an angel. He is Laures representative or deputy. He admires and loves Laures, but is deeply hurt when Laures choses Hilda instead of himself. Out of jealousy and in order to destroy Hilda he frees Zadei. He hopes to use Zadei and Zadei's love for his own personal plans, but soon he finds himself being Zadei's victim, who rapes and hurts Tetei when he refuses to obey.
Tetei wants to kill Hilda not only because of his jealousy, which is the strongest motive of course, but there is another motive as well. Tetei adors Laures as his Lord and he soon realises that Laures would be willing to sacrifice everything for Hilda, his life and even his power and title. Something Tetei would never allow to happen, for this would mean that he would not only lose his beloved Laures but also his beloved Lord Laures.
Zadei was (and still is) the general of demons (Makai Shôgun) and he is nearly as powerful as Laures. His right hand, shaped into a claw, his fangs and pointed ears are the sign for his demonic nature. In a fight for power he was defeated by Laures and sealed away. Later he gets released by Teteiyus, who hopes Zadei would slay Hilda and wants to use the general's affection for his own personal gain. But Zadei proved uncontrolable. Instead he tries to bind Tetei to him by implanting a jewel in his chest and treatening that he would let it explode if he would find out that Teteiyus betrayed him. Not knowing a way to reach Tetei's heart he uses his raw power to get what he desires unaware that he drives Tetei further away.
Zadei is comedy relief, as well as lethal and out for revenge. He is after Laures because he defeated and confined him. But he wants to do it alone.
As Laures would sacrifice everything for Hilda he would do the same for Tetei. Therefore he even agrees to fight under Rod's command against Laures. Unfortunetely he will never get a reward.
Hilda is the reincarnation of Alice. She works as a dancer and has no memories. She often wonders why Laures feels so attracted to her. When Roderick wants to seperate her from Laures she is deeply confused. Regardless what Laures does she feels attracted to him, even though she hates him for killing those who are threating her life.
She has no memories of her previous life as Alice either, yet still she has got the feeling as if she knows Laures from a long time ago. In the latest chapter, previously released in the 'Asuka Fantasy DX' #11/1997 she finally finds out that Alice's soul was reborn inside her body to fullfill the promise, that they will be united.
Roderick belongs to the Azel. By the mark of the Azel on his forehead, he is destined to wield the holy sword that rests inside Hilda's body and accoring to Rabi/Maruka become the Messiah by killing Laures an avenging the slaughter of his people.
Rod and Hilda grew up together and were in love until Laures showed up and erased her memories. Rod knows that Hilda feels attracted to Laures and he hopes that she'd soon realize his wicked nature and leave him.
Roderick is able to heal people, but is unable to cure deadly diseases.
Asbal is a very enigmatic person and until the seventh volume he has been a very friendly person who often came to Roderick's and Hilda's help. He is posing as Rod's guardian and tries to protect the boy from Maruka's influence. He seems to know much more about Maruka, Rod and his destiny as he admitts. He is able to force Maruka out of Rabi's body thus weakening her.
But even though he appears nice, easy-going and friendly there are hints throughout the story that he is more. Sometimes he has a very menacing look in his eyes especially when facing Maruka.
In the new chapters it is revealed that he is Paela's (an Azel-woman) son and that he was expelled of the Azel's community because he was regarded as 'the unpure child'. He has great magical powers. Power he has hated when he was small but now he is happy about it, for it is the only power that might even exceed Laures' whom he blames for the death of his mother.
Rabi is possesed by Maruka, the High-Priestress of the Azel. He or better Maruka guides Roderick into one sole direction: The path she wants him to follow (to wield the holy sword, avenge his poeples death and become the Messiah), even against his will and even if it would mean to openly manipulate him with her magics or even if it would mean to murder the woman Rod loves: Hilda, as she attempted in the second volume when Rabi/Maruka manipulated Gagul's mad wife to believe that Hilda killed her husband, thus sending her after Hilda in oder to avenge her husband's death.
