This portrait celebrates the extraordinary quest of Andres Segovia, the Andalusian par excellence who, in his childhood, fell in love with the sounds of the Spanish guitar and within 20 years had elevated it from the status of a folk instrument to the highest levels of the international concert platform. His achievement is among the marvels of Western music. The two very different Christopher Nupen films on this DVD are Segovia at Los Olivos, shot in Segovia's new home on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia in 1967, when he was 75, and thought by Segovia to be the best thing he ever did for television, and the prize-winning Andre Segovia: The Song of the Guitar, filmed in Granada and the Palaces of the Alhambra in 1976 when the Grand Master was 84.

This documentary traces the tragic story of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising in which nearly a quarter of a million Poles lost their lives. It includes much archive material that is rare, as well as remarkable eye-witness accounts from some of the principal survivors. To many people this Uprising is one of the great and controversial epics of modern history. But it was also the first skirmish in the Cold War and one of the earliest urban guerilla battles. Armed only with home made or captured weapons, and outnumbered by more than three to one, the citizens of Warsaw held out for over two months against the German Panzers. Their goal was to liberate their capital for themselves before the Russians came. Although the Red Army was only 10 miles away when the Uprising began, Stalin chose to delay his capture of Warsaw and to ignore until too late the pleas for help from the Poles besieged there. It suited his scheme of things, or course, for the Germans to eliminate for him the bulk of the non-Communist Poles before his own troops arrived on the scene. After brutally ending the Uprising, the Germans systematically razed Warsaw to the ground. But the Poles have laboriously and painstakingly rebuilt their capital almost exactly as it was.
