More recently, the American Film Institute named it one of the top ten movies of all time. The Ox-Bow Incident Henry Fonda and director William Wellman took on various commercial projects at Twentieth Century Fox in exchange for a deal that let them make this classic film. At a time when most Hollywood movies were patriotic victory dances whose sole goals were either fluff entertainment or patriotic morale boosters, The Ox-Bow Incident stood out as a complex exploration of human morality and an indictment of American values. Though the film did poorly at the box office when it opened, it has since become recognised as among the greatest releases of its day.
