German society, nowadays, is marked by postcolonial immigration. But in our discussion, concepts perceiving immigrants as "foreigners" still prevail. That's why we talk about "assimilational integration"- instead of self-determination - and toleration - instead of equal rights.
We will only be able to get out of this dead end by engaging in the actual debate of multiculturalism working upon adequate premises. This book tries to reconstruct, from the perspective of marginalized immigrants, ethnicity as historically based cultural identity that is not only open to the narration of collective experiences, but also to the recognition of difference. I intend to demonstrate, by a critical discussion of post-modern thesis of globalisation and decentering, the revalorization of difference, ambivalence, and change. These terms are also key-concepts in the post-colonial discourse of Anglo-American Cultural Studies, when culture and identity are discussed.
Without the security of essentialist guarantee, but with the notion of ethnicity, that is devoted to different voices, the post-colonial critique tries to conceive of a political strategy, where marginalization is revalorised and the hybrid culture of the 'borderlands' is promoted. It is a policy of subversion, which is already being applied in the cultural representation of immigrants and their everyday culture, not only in the Anglo-American societies, but also in Germany by second-generation-immigrant "New Germans".

Reviews
"Ha
develops an approach which is for me one of the most fascinating ones in recent
years in the 'strange fog' of multiculturalism ... Ha succeeds in doing this
enlightening analyse especially gripping and for me also convincing when he
discusses rap and 'signifying' as a liberation of terms which is part of
everyday culture ... What to do with this book? Read it in any case!"

"German
standard work!
This book is the best source about racism in Germany. Among other things it
shows how supposed anti-racist discourses about 'foreigners' are involved in
the production of discrimination. Kien Nghi Ha relates his work to
international, mostly Anglo-American discussions and gives in a fresh and
self-conscious way evidence that German discourses are in their terminology
still on a special path, because they are still affected by 'scientific
regression' and cannot contribute to the explanation of or the struggle against
racism in everyday life. This book contradicts all mainstream perspectives and
should be necessary reading for the 'good minded'. Irritating, but many
aha-experiences are guaranteed!"

"The discussion and the practical use of
postmodern approaches, but also the deliberate take up of the postcolonial
discourse in the Anglo-American Cultural Studies are particularly successful.
The argument is especially vivid, because it is continually grounded in
practices like postcolonial music e.g. rap or literary works that deal with
migration experiences. Without academical unintelligibility, but, however well
informed and with rich source material, Kien Nghi Ha presents an impressive
pleading for cultural diversity, that overcomes a homogenous, ethnical term of
culture and shows up practical ways in the often over intellectualized
postmodern discourse. The discussion about immigration in Germany can only
profit from this book"

"The
political scientist Kien Nghi Ha takes us on a journey through the world of
ideas of postcolonial critique. His discussion of starting points, which was
developed in the context of Anglo-American literary criticism and which haven't
been received broadly in Germany, is not a replay of theoretical core elements,
but undertakes the challenge to ask all the time for the practical worth of
postcolonialism for local contexts. [...] One wishs that this understanding of
postcolonial perspective will gain more scientific attention in this country."

"Ambitious access
The author shows the pitfalls of [essentialist]
politics of identity and discuss in detail possible forms of resistance against
degrading images of migrants. He also relates his argumentation to migrants in
Germany. His book is can give the actual debate on immigration and integration
more depth"

"Ha leads
us to the different postcolonial categories like hybridity, mimicry,
dislocation, cross-bordering, 'borderlands' etc. and gives a good general view
of the works of authors like Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha or bell hooks, just to
mention some ... Students and people who are interested in this subject will
supply with rich material"

"This
book is written with verve and contains many parts that can give insights in
cultural specifics. This also means illustrative short introductions in the

Basics in Social Philosophy and Sociology
"‘Einstiege’ (approaches, accesses) is what free-rock climbers look for. In our case the cliffs are those of social philosophy and sociology" (Hans-Jürgen Ritsert).
The objective of this series is to put an end to the prevailing boredom in social sciences. "Einstiege. Grundbegriffe der Sozialphilosophie und Gesellschaftstheorie" addresses itself to a broader public which tries to tackle the steep faces of social philosophy and social theory: "approaches", which allow climbers to find their own routes through the rocks of these fields of learning. Consequently, the arguments have to be readable, as well as profound and up-to-date. On approximately 190 pages each volume discusses certain basic terms. Each treatise is centered around a discussion of the main implications of the terms selected.
The difference between an introduction and what here is called "approach" lies in what they aim at respectively. An introduction has to meet the criteria of completeness. Our "approach‘s" task is an easier one, and, at the same time, a more difficult one: On the one hand it does not aim at meeting the criteria of completeness, on the other hand it goes into the matter more profoundly than the introduction is able to, by taking up virulent discourses, contemporary scientific discussions and political debates. This way, the "Einsteiger" is supposed to get not only a foretaste of the subject, but also a real taste of dealing with it and of the fun and fascination of actually reasoning about it.
"According to Nietzsche, we should be able to dance also with our heads: And every day without dancing at least one time is lost for us" (Rainer Rotermundt).

What about this name the publishing house gave itself, and which might appear strange or funny? In fact, it refers to the periodical "Westphälisches Dampfboot", published during the "Vormärz-period" (1845 - 1848) in the range of two centers of Industrialisation - the Bergisch-märkische iron-industry and the Ravensbergian textile industry: It’s purpose was to be an instrument in the societal and political conflicts of the time.
