Under the joint patronage
of the the Union of Dramatic Ensembles of Ouagadougou (UNEDO) and the Burkinabé
Centre of the ITI, FITMO remains true to its original aims :
-
Provide a local framework
for encounters between African artists
-
Facilitate the
circulation of artistic productions ;
-
Provide an opportunity
for artists to discover each other’s work and stimulate joint projects
(co-productions, training workshops etc) ;
-
Create a market for
performing arts, not only among African promoters but also for those from
other parts of the world.
-
Contribute to raising
the artistic quality of theatre performances by encouraging the pursuit
of excellence among partipants and by enabling them to share in the multiplicity
of enriching experiences provided by the various events ;
-
Offering the audience
a diversity of dramatic approaches ;
-
Obtaining audience fidelity
and attracting new audiences ;
-
Creating and nourishing
a taste for theatre among young audiences *.
Serious discussions
of major issues, triggered off and sustained by extremely grave socio-political
events seem to convey the aspiration of all peoples towards peace and greater
respect for Human Rights.
Is there any art
that has been better able than the theatre to be at the core of this struggle
in Africa ?
Police and economic
censure, the repression and exile of writers, the lack of infrastructures
for diffusion of artistic works in our countries, the lack of protection
for authors’ rights etc. are there to bear witness to the fact that the
theatre as a factor of artistic liberation of thought and of public expression
is still encountering serious difficulties on the continent.
Wole Soyinka and
Sony Labou Tansi have been the best examples of the commitment of theatre
persons in the defence of human rights and peace ;
FITMO 2000 invites
festival participants to look a this question through its theme :
“ Theatre, Human
Rights and Peace in Africa ”.
What role
must the theatre and theatre people play in the defense of human rights
and peace as humanity stands on the threshold of the 3rd Millenium ?
FITMO 2000 will
pay homage to a playwright that has his place among the best of his generation
: Sony Labou Tansi. A special time in the festival will be dedicated to
this man and his work through play readings and performances (In the theatre
Sony Labou Tansi of the Espace Culturel Gambidi in Ouagadougou).
In conclusion, one
of the innovations in FITMO 2000 will consist of the organization of a
exhibition and sale of plays in collaboration with publishers and bookshops.
Manuscripts of plays will be made available to the public. Festival under
the direction of Jean-Pierre Guingané, Espace Culturel Gambidi,
