Most comets come from the Oort Cloud: a vast
cloud of dust, rock, and ice that surrounds our solar
system like a halo. This cloud came into being along
with the rest of the solar system some 4.6 billion
years ago. Astronomers believe that Comet
Hale-Bopp came from this cloud.

At some time during the last 4.6 billion years something caused Comet
Hale-Bopp to leave the Oort Cloud and begin falling towards the Sun.
Perhaps it was a passing star whose gravitational influence set it in motion.
Perhaps it was a collision with another Oort Cloud resident.

When it fell into the gravitational well of the Sun Comet Hale-Bopp was going
at just the right speed and at just the right angle that the Sun was able to
capture it and bring the comet into an elliptical orbit. Had Comet Hale-Bopp
ot been at the right speed and angle of approach it would have simply raced
past the Sun and off into interstellar space, never to be seen again.

Comet Hale-Bopp last passed Earth's way during the time frame of
tremendous advancement and upheaval throughout the ancient world.
The comet paid its last visit during the period of Great Pyramid buidling in Egypt as well as the  construction of the Stonehenge circle on England's Salsbury Plains.  The great Ziggarat of Ur would not be built for another century after Comet Hale-Bopp's visit.

HBc
The comet made its closest approach to the Sun on April 1, 1997. The distance at perihelion was 85 million miles. Its closest approach to Earth (122 million miles) occured several days earlier on March 22. To put these distances intoperspective, Earth is about 93 million miles from the Sun. Thus Comet Hale-Bopp never got closer to Earth than Earth gets to the Sun.

Has earned the title "Comet Of The Century"
It's brief visit stirred the imagination of both young and old
Like a beacon it was there for all to view until the powers of the universe
withdrew it from our sight.
Having left our Solar System - It travels through Interstellar Space
Returning again in about 2380 years
from now (or around 4377 AD)
