Late Carolingian Initials

Late Carolingian Initials

These are some examples of initials from manuscripts written and illuminated shortly after the turn of the first millenium.  They are all kept in the library of the see of Cologne.

I'm in love with the gold initials on purple background, so you'll get those first. They are from the MS Dom 12.
The manuscript was created in a Cologne workshop between 1010 and 1020 by an illuminator from Reichenau and (most likely) a calligrapher from Seeon.

These two initials are not quite as elaborate, but nevertheless beautiful.

Initial B (10,1 KB)

Dom Hs. 12, 5r

Initial M (13,6 KB)

Dom Hs. 12, 17r

The following are from the above two manuscripts plus a third one, I'll add the details during the next week.
