Oriane's Page

Welcome

to the web pages of Mistress Oriane d’Avallon, residing in the Shire Drei Eichen in Drachenwald.

These pages came into existence to show ‚things‘ to my apprentices and students, and other people interested in scribal things.

The Unusual Bits & Pieces in Manuscrips show some odds & ends I came across in manuscripts.

The Parchment Page describes the process of making parchment. I make my own from rabbits I raise.

The Scribes' Doodles Page gives you exactly those: "doodles" by the medieval scribes.

The Late Carolingian Initials Page shows you some examples of late carolingian initials from my favourite manuscript. This page is intended as reference site for a current project.

Black manuscript pages can be seen here. This page shows both surviving pieces and some of my own scrolls on black parchment.

Arms of Mistress Oriane d‘Avallon
Mistress Oriane d‘Avallon in her favourite heraldic dress In the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) I am a member of the Order of the Laurel (for Calligraphy & Illumination), which is the highest Arts & Sciences award our members can receive. The usual form of address for a Laurel is Master or Mistress. A person elevated to this Order is not only very knowledgeable of their chosen field, but they are also known to be courteous, chivalrous, and more than willing to pass on their knowledge. We often take on Apprentices and Students, the latter informally.

My biggest love in the SCA is C&I, but I also love to dance. My interests are also branching out into all kinds of material preparations having to do with C&I and books, book binding, silversmithing and enameling, and of course I like to play around with costuming and a lot of other ‘stuff’.

I am also the Founding Baroness of the Barony Drei Eichen, the first all German group of the SCA in Drachenwald. Drei Eichen used to cover the area from Bonn to Aachen to Kleve to Dusseldorf to Dortmund to Cologne - pretty big and on the border to Belgium and the Netherlands.

Mundanely I am Hedwig Riebe, living in the small but old little town Juelich in the westernmost parts of Germany, together with my husband and our three children, a cat, and an ever changing number of rabbits in a big house with a garden - not to mention a full time job as secretary. In the spring of 2002 we added bees to our ever growing zoo, which are now leading me on a chase of 'medieval' bees (Apis mellifera mellifera) and medieval bee keeping. They'll get an English page of their own eventually ... currently they are available in German only, but with lots of pretty pictures.

If you want to contact me, you can do that here.
