Aeroflot signed a contract with Irish startup airline Skynet.

Aeroflot had been seeking a relationship with a European Union carrier to give it access to new routes under the EU's Open Skies agreement.

The deal with SkyNet is more modest than Aeroflot's earlier intention of buying into an existing carrier. Earlier this year Aeroflot wanted to buy a stake in bankrupt Virgin Express Ireland, but those plans fell through.

Aeroflot will not have equity in SkyNet but will be a commercial partner, Healy said in a telephone interview from Dublin. The airline was founded and financed by Irish and American businessmen.

SkyNet, based in Shannon, was set up prior to the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States but the resulting slump in the global aviation industry has not dampened its enthusiasm about the project, Healy said. He added that some $10 million has been invested in the project, which he said would be recouped in two to three years. "It's almost an opportune time. Since Sept. 11, aircraft leases have dropped considerably and crews are more available," he said.

The airline will start operating in April, hauling passengers between Moscow and Dublin and Shannon, at first via two European cities, one of which will be Warsaw. The part of the journey from the European cities to Moscow will be done on behalf of Aeroflot. The airline will operate two Boeing-737-400s.

Russia's flagship carrier has direct flights to Dublin and Shannon. Aeroflot spokesman Lev Koshlyakov said those flights may be scrapped when the arrangement with SkyNet is up and flying.

ALM Antillean Airlines will be renamed to Dutch Caribbean Express.

Since 1997, ALM has been trying to reorganize itself and prepare it for privatization. All attempts have failed, several CEOs were hired in a revolving door style and nothing was accomplished. ALM being a government-owned airline since 1964 was never ever profitable since its founding, its nothing but a heavily debt-laden airline unable to recover ever in political turnmoil. Finally, as of last month the local government of the island territory of Curacao where ALM is based at Curinta - Hato Airport, took posession of the assets of ALM and it was basically no longer the national airline of the Netherlands Antilles.

With the new ownership also came a new name for former ALM. The new name adopted for the airline is "DCE - Dutch Caribbean Express" (trading name for DCA - Dutch Caribbean Airline N.V.)

The 'new' airline founded from the assets of ALM has a new corporate image (called the 'Kayena' image) designed by Curacao artist Jan Hagen. It features a life-like red flower on the aircraft tail known locally on the islands as 'Kayena' (hibiscus rosa-sinensis) in Papiamento and is widely found all over the islands. This 'Kayena' is also featured in stylised form on the DCE logo, which is prominently placed at the front of the aircraft. The livery also displays the airline's new website(www.DutchCaribbeanExpress.com) to promote online ticket sales. On the Dash 8-300s this is displayed on the engine cowlings while on the MD-82s it will probably be on the engine cowlings too or somewhere on the fuselage.

Turkish travel group Kayi Tourism has unveiled a new airline venture - Sky Airlines - established in a bid to ensure it has enough aircraft capacity to match its ambitions for charter passenger traffic from Europe into Turkey this summer.

Yalim Tilev responsible for airline management at the Antalya-based tour operator says the company is leasing three Boeing 737-400s from US lessor GATX. The 170-seat aircraft will be delivered in March in time for the planned start of services in April.

Tilev explains: "Last year because of the crisis in the [Turkish charter] airlines, we could not find any aircraft to bring in tourist traffic. In view of the positive outlook for 2001 we have decided to create an airline. Our aim is to carry 300,000 tourists from Germany, France and the UK."

Sky Airlines marks Kayi Tour's second entry into the aviation market. In 1995 it established charter carrier GTI Airlines, operating with three Airbus A300s. But in 1998 it sold the carrier to Turkish businessman Hasan Cebi, who continues to operate the airline under the name Air Anatolia.

Another tour operator, UK-based Libra Holidays, last year announced plans to launch a Cyprus-based charter operation also called Sky Airlines and using Boeing 737-800s from 2002.
