PHILIP WORKMAN IS SCHEDULED TO BE EXECUTED: ANOTHER INNOCENT MAN COULD DIE?
PHILIP WORKMAN has been sentenced to death for the shooting, in 1981, of a police Officer after a robbery he admitted. He was granted a stay by the 6th Circuit of Appeals a few days before his latest execution date, January 31st. Despite the new evidence (ballistic tests, X-ray showing with no doubt that the fatal bullet that killet Lt. Oliver cannot come from Workman's gun...), the US Supreme Court did refuse to hear Workman's appeals. But how can a state execute someone who has been convicted on a perjured testimony? Harold Davis, the only "state witness" did recant last fall and did say that he has been threatened and coerced by police. Politics reply that Harold Davis is NOT RELIABLE and that his new "testimony" has not been given under oath.. Well.. Harold Davis was indeed deeply reliable for the state during the trial! And if they want him to testify under oath, there is a solution: another trial! WE ARE OUTRAGED. If Philip Wokman's execution is carried out, it is an open door for corruption everywhere in the United States.
THIS PERJURED TESTIMONY WAS THE ONLY DIRECT EVIDENCE MAKING WORKMAN ELIGIBLE FOR CAPITAL MURDER AND DEATH PENALTY! State Attorney General Paul Summers said that "the new evidence -the witness' recantation- is simply not worthy of this court's consideration." SO NO RETRIAL? NO! Only errors at trial or in appeals are permissible. Now there is only clemency or mercy for Philip Workman. And Governor Don Sundquist -who favor death penalty- will have the last answer.
"IF WE KILL PHILIP WORKMAN, WE MAY AS WELL STRAP JUSTICE TO THE GURNEY" -Helen Hawk Shelton, Tennessee victims' rights advocate and death penalty supporter.
Please, urge Governor Don Sundquist to grant clemency to Philip Wokman!
