Biography

Here is a short bio of the three producers. How they came together and how they split. Of course this biography is not fully complete but for that, the three guys have to write it down and only Pete Waterman have done this yet.

Mike Stock

Born December 3, 1951

1969 he leaves school to study theology and drama at the University of Hull.

1971 he drops the study and starts working in several jobs like petrol pump attendant for example (till this point his carreer is nearly the same than mine :-)).

1976 Stock starts professional singing in clubs and pubs.

1977 He adds a drummer and a guitarist to his performances.

1981 Stock recruited a guy named Matt Aitken for hotel-booking and pub-gigs for his cover-band “Mirage”.

1983 Mirage is playing their last concert at the Royal Lancester Hotel.

1984 Stock and Aitken meet producer Peter Collins who introduces them to Pete Waterman.

January 15, 1984 Stock and Aitken meet Pete Waterman an they decide to work together. You know the rest!

 

Matt Aitken

Born August 25, 1956

1974 he leaves school to take a job in a local government. Also he joines a semi-professional band around this time.

1987 he leaves his old job and now works as a professional musician in several bands for the next years.

1981 Aitken is recruited by a guy named Mike Stock for his band “Mirage” for hotel-booking and pub-gigs.

1983 Mirage is playing their last concert at the Royal Lancester Hotel.

1984 Stock and Aitken meet producer Peter Collins who introduces them to Pete Waterman.

January 15, 1984 Stock and Aitken meet Pete Waterman an they decide to work together. You know the rest!

Pete Waterman

Born yes, too

1958 he starts working as a DJ, don´t knowing at this time that his profession would be called so later.

1967 Pete goes to America

1969 Fleetwood Mac books Pete for their shows.

1970 Pete is mostly known as the major Motown-Dj in Britain.

1973 Pete goes to Jamaica and produces his first own record for 80$. The start of his career as a producer.

1975 Pete works in Munich with the producers of “Silver Convention”.

1979 Pete sets up his own company “Loose Ends” and works together with Peter Collins.

1982 Pete and Peter are producing their records in America and they have worldwide hits with Nik Kershaw or Musical Youth.

1984 Pete comes back to the UK an sets up his new label “PWL”

January 15, 1984 Pete signs two guys called Mike Stock and Matt Aitken as producers and writers. You know the rest!

1985 Stock-Aitken-Waterman have their very first Top20-Single “You think you´re a man” performed by Divine and their first Top5-Hit with Hazel Dean´s “Whatever I do”. Later thas year they score their first No.1 with Dead or Alive´s “You spin me round”.

1987 Mel & Kim´s “Respectable” reaches No.1 in the charts and this was the first No.1 wich was produced and written by them as a team. Two more number ones are following.

1988 “Only” one UK-No.1 this year with Kylie Minogue´s “I should be so lucky”.

1989 Seven number ones this year. An outstanding success.

1991 Matt Aitken leaves the SAW-Team after 7 great years. The beginning of the end!

1993 After having a few more hits Stock and Waterman split.

1994 Mike Stock launches “Love This-Records”. He and Airken reunite and they work now in Stock´s new studio in South-London.

1995 They have their next No.1 with Robson & Jeromes “Unchained Melody/White Cliffs of Dover”

2001 Unfortunately all their CDs are not longer available here in Germany and so I didn´t got any news of them for years. But I´m working on it !

 

Early 90´s Pete decides to sell 50% of his company to Warner which wasn´t a good decision although PWL had success with Opus3, Undercover and 2unlimited to name only a few.

1996 Pete leaves Warner and forms a partnership with Zomba-Records.

1997 First new little hits with the Steps for example

1998 More hits with the Steps again, Solid Harmonie, Five or the Backstreet Boys

1999 The Steps score their first No.1 with Heartbeat/Tragedy

2000 Work on the new PWL-Studio is finished and also Petes Biography is written down completely.
