Fifth and final FIS Grand Prix contest at Sapporo (JPN). First German GP overall winner! Sven Hannawald gained his first GP title after ranking 4th in this contest. Incredible performance since he chose a shorter inrun during the first run for safety reasons. Though on top this day were two Austrians. Andi Widhölzl and Andi Goldberger won this competition in front of Masahiko Harada. Go for results!

Second FIS Grand Prix team contest at Hakuba (JPN). Quite a demonstration of the Japanese team who won on their home hill in front of Austria. Germany and Finland became 3rd and 4th.

Fourth FIS Grand Prix contest at Hakuba (JPN). Second GP victory for Sven Hannawald (GER). The GP overall leader won with 122.0 m and 123.5 m. Now he has the chance to win the GP overall cup since there is only one more individual contest at Sapporo. Janne Ahonen and Kazuyoshi Funaki became 2nd and 3rd.

New problems for last winter’s shooting star Martin Schmitt. His former partner Erich März has now brought him to court. The reason is that März’s agency has helped Schmitt to a contract with RTL (German commercial channel who is going to broadcast the events of the coming winter). März says that Schmitt has still some provisions to pay. Schmitt has already contacted his lawyers to solve this problem.

Third FIS Grand Prix contest at Stams (AUT). After having ranked 7th twice German Martin Schmitt celebrated a great comeback on top of the ski jumping circuit. Masahiko Harada (JPN) and Andreas Goldberger (AUT) ranked 2nd and 3rd. Youngster Wolfgang Loitzl (AUT) also did quite well and became 6th on his home hill. In front of him were Sven Hannawald who defended his top position in the overall ranking and Janne Ahonen.

Last Continental-Cup summer contest at Markollen (NOR). And again it turned out to be a German jumper’s day! This time Georg Späth won, in front of Bjarte Engen Vik (NOR), a pretty great doing Nordic Combined, and Frank Löffler (GER). Next Conti-Cup contest will be at Rena (FIN) on Dec. 12, 1999 when the main season opens.

Day 2’s Continental-Cup contest at Zakopane (POL). German Dirk Else won this competition. Adam Malysz (POL) and Bine Norcic (SLO) ranked 2nd and 3rd.

Day 1’s Continental-Cup contest at Zakopane (POL). A very stabile jumping Frank Löffler (GER) won the sixth Conti-Cup contest this summer. 3rd was Lukasz Kruczek behind his team mate Wojiciech Skupien.

Second FIS Grand Prix contest at Courchevel (FRA). Andreas Widhölzl (AUT) won this contest quite unexpectedly since he had not even made it into the final round at Hinterzarten. Masahiko Harada (JPN) and Andreas Goldberger (AUT) were 2nd and 3rd. German Sven Hannawald became 8th after not quite satisfying jumps. Though in the Grand Prix overall standings he is still 1st, but Janne Ahonen (FIN) who ranked 4th is only 2 points behind him.

First FIS Grand Prix individual contest at Hinterzarten. Sven Hannawald confirmed the great results of the past days. Within four days he won two individual contests and one team contest (there were only three competitions *g*). Andreas Goldberger (AUT) was third behind Janne Ahonen (FIN). Swiss Bruno Reuteler also did quite well – he was fourth.

First FIS Grand Prix team contest at Hinterzarten. Though having to get along without Dieter Thoma for a long time, the German team won the contest, followed by the Japanese and the Austrian. The Swiss seem to be in surprisingly good condition after last season's mess. They were 5th behind Finland.

German ski jumper Dieter Thoma announced his retirement. After his 8th knee operation he had serious problems recovering from it. Since he doesn’t think he can make it back to the top ski jumping-circuit loses one of his most engaged and experienced athletes. All the best, Dieter!

Without being noticed by people the jumpers of the Intercontinental-Cup had their first official contest at Velenje (SLO). German Michael Uhrmann won both contests.

German jumpers were on their way to Courchevel (FRA) to get into training on the Olympic hill. Martin Schmitt showed equal stability and skills to his last season’s powerful performance. Though his collegues Sven Hannawald, Christof Duffner, Hansjörg Jäkle and Gerd Siegmund made good jumps either.

Martin Schmitt joins German soccer club Bayern München for some practise. Quite a lot of female fans watched them so Martin Schmitt also had to be protected by bodyguards.

Big welcome party for German jumpers and their coaches at Hinterzarten (Schwarzwald). Many many fans joined them to celebrate and honor their great performances throughout the season. The whole event was recorded by SWR and will be partly broadcasted on next Sunday's afternoon (4/04/1999).

Hospital reports Valery Kobelev has finally regained conciousness. He woke late in yesterday's evening. It seems that he will suffer no longterm injuries.

Day 3’s ski flying contest at Planica/Slovenia and world cup final. Second German world cup ranking winner!! Martin Schmitt (GER) was able to defend his one day-old leadership with his 3rd rank and finished his unbelievable season even better. Winner of this competition was Noriaki Kasai (JPN), 2nd Hideharu Miyahira (JPN). Janne Ahonen (FIN) became 8th and 2nd of the world cup ranking. MORE

Day 2’s qualification at Planica/Slovenia. NEW WORLD RECORD! Norwegian Tommy Ingebrigtsen beat the only one-day-old world record of Martin Schmitt (GER). Ingebrigtsen flew 219.5 m which is exactely 0.5 m more than the German.

Day 1’s ski flying contest at Planica/Slovenia. Martin Schmitt (GER) won and beat the last world record of Lasse Ottesen (NOR) (212.0 m) not only one time, but twice. But since he touched the ground in the end his 219.0 m-flight was not officially accepted. So only his second try at 214.5 is now named as the latest world record. Kazuyoshi Funaki (JPN) and Christoph Duffner (GER) ranked 2nd and 3rd. Janne Ahonen (FIN) became 5th and lost more than 50 points in the world cup ranking to his German rival Martin Schmitt. MORE
According to hospitalīs reports Valery Kobelevīs condition has stabilized, but still remained very critical.

Day 1’s qualification at Planica/Slovenia. A fatal accident occured when Valery Kobelev (RUS) fell badly during the qualification. The hospital reports he is seriously injured and has not regained conciousness yet. Get better soon!!!!

Season’s last ski jumping contest at Oslo/Norway. Noriaki Kasai (JPN) won the traditional competition at Oslo, 2nd was Martin Schmitt (GER) and 3rd Kazuyoshi Funaki (JPN).

Ski jumping contest at Falun/Sweden. German shooting star Martin Schmitt continued his great victory series. He earned his 9th World Cup win by jumping 124.0 m twice. Hideharu Miyahira and Masahiko Harada (both JPN) became 2nd and 3rd.

Ski jumping contest at Trondheim/Norway. Two big surprises! World Cup ranking leader Janne Ahonen (FIN) and Kazuyoshi Funaki (JPN) did not make it to the final round. That&146;s why the Finnish lost quite a lot of World Cup points to Martin Schmitt (GER) who became 5th. Noriaki Kasai (JPN) gained one more win. Stefan Horngacher (AUT) and Masahiko Harada (JPN) became 2nd and 3rd.

Day 2’s ski jumping contest at Lahti/Finland. Due to bad wind conditions this competition was cancelled.

Day 1’s ski jumping contest at Lahti/Finland. Due to bad wind conditions the contest was moved from the large hill (K 120) to the normal hill (K 90). But since the wind conditions still remained critical Dieter Thoma and Martin Schmitt (both GER) decided not to jump. They said the jury was not able to control the wind’s fierceness. That’s why they were not willing to risk their health. The decision of Martin Schmitt in particular was unexpected since he lost important points to the Finnish world cup leader Janne Ahonen who became 4th. However, the jury broke the contest off after the first round. Kazuyoshi Funaki (JPN) won this competition, in front of Reinhard Schwarzenberger (AUT) and Sven Hannawald (GER). Very good results for the remaining German jumpers. Christoph Duffner and Hansjörg Jäckle (both GER) ranked 6th and 7th.

Nordic tournament’s opening contest at Kuopio/Finland. 8th World Cup victory for German Martin Schmitt. He beat Kazuyoshi Funaki and Noriaki Kasai (both JPN) by jumping 128.5 and 124.5 m. World cup ranking leader Janne Ahonen (FIN) became only 18th.

World championship’s last ski jumping contest at Ramsau/Austria. Big victory for the Japanese jumpers! Kazuyoshi Funaki gained the gold medal on Ramsauīs normal hill, Hideharu Miyahira silver and "oldie" Masahiko Harada bronze. MORE

World championship’s team contest at Bischofshofen/Austria. What a surprise! German team including Sven Hannawald, Christoph Duffner, Dieter Thoma and Martin Schmitt won the first world championship’s team gold medal!!! Despite two fumbles and really bad weather conditions they jumped one inofficial and two official hill records. That's why they outranked the Japanese team who clearly were the favorites. Austria became 3rd. MORE

World championship’s first ski jumping contest at Bischofshofen/Austria. German shooting star Martin Schmitt gained his first gold medal by jumping 126.0 and 129.5 m on the large hill of Bischofshofen. Surprisingly Sven Hannawald completed the great German result by winning the silver medal. Japanese Hideharu Miyahira became 3rd. MORE

German championships at Oberwiesenthal. German jumper Alexander Herr fumbled during the qualification. His knee is badly hurt and has to be operated so he can not jump for the rest of this season. ALL THE BEST!!!!!
