There have been many legendary encounters during the illustrious history of Wimbledon, none more than the men's semi-final match between Bjorn Borg and Vitas Gerulaitis in 1977. Seeded number 8, Vitas Gerulaitis was up against his long time friend and practice partner Bjorn Borg, seeded number 2 and also the defending Champion. In 1976, at the age of 20, Borg won his first of five Championships, without losing a single set. In 1977, he had been taken the full distance as early as the 2nd round by Mark Edmondson, Reaching the semi-final, Borg took the advantage by breaking service in the opening game, forcing himself ahead of Gerulaitis, who then responded by drawing level. Tied at 2 sets all, Gerulaitis broke service in the fifth game, to lead the match for the first time at 3-2. Gerulaitis' advantage lasted no longer than one game as Borg displayed his champion's calibre when he broke service and then went on to win the fifth set 8-6. Borg's defeat of Gerulaitis was considered to be the outstanding match of the Championship. It was an enthralling contest of the highest quality. Played at a lightening pace, it held the rapt attention of the Centre Court for three hours and remained in the memory of many, long after its conclusion.

Manchester United FC V Benfica: 1968 European Cup Final, at Woolworths
Manchester United's dream of capturing the coveted European Cup was finally fulfilled on a balmy, never-to-be-forgotten night at Wembly Stadium. It was the dramatic conclusion to a twelve year quest to claim the enormous trophy, which had began, under the guidance of legendary manager Matt Busby, in 1956 when United became the first English club to enter the competition. A near capacity crowd packed Wembley for the eagerly-awaited clash, but it wasn't until the second half that the contest really got into it's stride. Bobby Charlton gave United the lead early in the second half, but with ten minutes remaining, Jaime Graca scored to put Benfica on level terms. No further goals in normal time meant that an extra half hour was required to decide the destination of the gleaming trophy, but United didn't need that long for within ten minutes George Best, Brian Kidd (on his 19th birthday) and Bobby Charlton had scored to put United on the course for glory. It was a particularly poignant occasion for Busby, Charlyon and Foulkes for they had all survived the Munich Air Disaster of ten years earlier when 23 people, including 11 players and staff, perished on the snowy wastes of a bavarian airfield when their plane crashed after two previous attempts to take-off had been aborted. The United party had stopped off in the German city to re-fuel on their journey home from a European cup-tie against Red Star in Belgrade. Manchester United had become English football's first ever Kings of Europe and twenty four hours later there were close on a million people thronging Central Manchester when the team paraded the European Cup through the streets. It was the pinnacle of achievement for the club at that time and the triumph was further recognised soon after when Matt Busby was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours' List.
